Before I can look around a hand forces all the light from my eyes, keeping me in the dark. The pulse in my neck threatens to burst as I realize how helpless I feel. I scream but as fast as the first hand covers the light, the second hand covers my mouth.
“Shhh,” he whispers in my ear, sending chills down my back. The smell of dirt and earthworms overwhelms my nostrils, making me wonder if the person holding me has already dug my grave.
“Adeline, stop moving. Do you want them to see you? Are you crazy?” the man hisses in my ear.
I struggle against my captor who has me suggesting to him that yes, I want them to see me. He moves his hand from my eyes to my waist to hold me down. The light is blinding. I try to move my head around but can’t. I kick against his legs with my heels to try to get him to break his grip. Each time I resist I find his grasp to be increasingly urgent.
The sound of horses and strange voices reach me beyond a place I can see. As I thrash to move my head to the direction of the sound, I get a glimpse of where the voices are coming from. Men. (Or at least I think they’re men.) They’re wearing black armor and their white hair flows behind them leaving a dusting of decay. Their sunken eyes tell me no amount of sleepless nights and lack of coffee did this to their appearance. My eyes widen as I must assume my attacker looks the same.
Adeline is in a new world and apart from her estranged family, she is alone this time.
Working out the details to the second book in the series, Gateshifter.
When the darkness is all you have left, breaking through the realms might be your only option. Of course there is always a price and your life might be the cost.
Chapter 1
Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire
My blood runs cold. Darkness falls as the night grows. My five cousins shout with excitement to be home on their planet. I contemplate it all in my head. Maybe they are just happy to rescue their parents and my dad. Either way I know I have no one I can trust if things go ugly.
Giant windmills stand stagnant against the background of an incandescent sunset. The suns rays’ meteors across the sky leaving hues of orange and yellow breaking through in the corner of the horizon with a coolness of blue.
“Ok now here’s the plan, let’s split up and search the area for them.” I glance around nervously hoping I am wrong about my gut feeling.
The oldest Acis, looks over his shoulder at me while keeping his arm around the male twin sibling Hayden. “Adeline, I realize this might look like an easy feat to you, but we can’t just go out in the dark hoping they will appear.”
I don’t even know him, but I can tell by the tone of his voice and the pitch he is becoming increasingly cocky. My other cousins must have sensed it too because the youngest girl tries to stop him from talking.
“Acis, relax we are home. Give the girl a rest, after all she is your cousin and Jacob’s daughter.”
There is that word “home”.

Amusement Park
* * *
A cold wind comes off the water as it sweeps over the area. Echo wraps her coat tighter around her waist. Shards of numbing ice sting her soft skin. She can smell the decay from the dead leaves whipping in the air. The weeds grow in between the pavement in every direction, making a labyrinth for the ants scattering about the ground. The jungle-like vegetation makes the entrance to an abandoned amusement park barely visible. Broken glass lies scattered on the ground from the booths left warn and gray. Echo walks with caution into the opening of the park. Four booths are on the left with faded letters of, "Cotton Candy, Funnel Cakes, Fries, and Sandwiches.”
Her eyes dart quickly in every direction. She tries to take a deep breath to calm the suppressing panic developing inside her body. Her shoulders slumped subconsciously trying to make her already small body disappear. Her right hand grips a stuffed bunny tighter as she plays with a locket of hair in her left.
The wind dies down giving an eerie calm, the kind of weather before a big storm. The gray and pale blue stratus clouds move across the sky engulfing what is left of the sunlight. In the center of the park is a large merry-go-round which seems to draw in Echo's young eyes. The sound of the past grows louder as she walks by the rides. Voices carry around her like a whisper in her ear. "Echo where are you?" a faintly familiar voice hangs over the sounds of the carnival.
The Girl with the Golden Thread is the first in a chapter book series, The Golden Thread.
Darsha weaves the thread into her projects and changes the lives of other people. The thread strengthens and also threatens to tear apart the lives in her community.
